Evolution.

After a long silence, The Knife announced that they are writing an opera for Hotel Pro Forma. The opera is a celebration of and inspired by the 150th anniversary of Darwin's Origin of Species. Olof Dreijer is currently in the Amazon recording sounds of animals, fish and plants. Japan's Hiroaki Umeda is coreographing the piece and it will premiere in Denmark 2009. Can you fucking imagine? I've heard him a couple times on Z100, but I never knew he actually lived up to his name! Now he's getting a lot of attention for his Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) parody. Even Anderson Cooper talked about it on CNN... Is he a Chaser? Either way, bless his heart for giving props. Cubby most of packed something in the crotch because it's awfully bulky. Would have fit better if he didn't. Maybe I'll go buy a leotard and see for myself.

Unexpected Masterpiece #2.

Tori Amos' Under the Pink is a record that I listen to more frequently than any other. It's also the record I am the most closeted about loving. I really shouldn't care, so I'm coming out and talking about it. Under the Pink manages to combine a sweetness, darkness and sensuality that is irrisistable to a meloncholy heart. It's a favorite walking around the city alone. It was a favorite while doing coke till 6 AM with an ex talking about our love for eachother. It's a favorite when I want to remember the confusion of youth (Pretty Good Year), the disappointment with religion (God) or the reality of being exploited (Cornflake Girl). Musically and lyrically there is no other collection of songs written by a women making popular music that trancends petty angst and is actually gut wrenching emotion recorded to tape. The chord change in Past the Mission drops you off a cliff. Feel your heart break over lost love in the autobiographical Baker Baker. Hear a hymn played by a women scorned in Icicle... It's terrifying. The artwork brilliantly tells the same story. Beauty and wreckage.

At Last.

The reasons I am in awe of President Elect Barack Obama are: I wanted a new President who was intelligent and eloquent. I wanted a new President who did not save face or apologize for irrelevant accusations. I wanted a new President who wasn't priveledged and entitled. I wanted a new President who was thoughtful and steady. I wanted a new President who represented the slowing of hate in this country. I wanted to be a proud American again.

The first time I felt patriotic was the year I moved to NYC. I moved here in January 2001. By September 11th I was well aware of being a New Yorker and an American. Unfortunately, Bush also moved in January 2001... Into the White House. And by that Fall, what could have been an opportunity to unite the country and take the high road... He chose the lowest of roads. 8 years later here we are. We are in one of our countries deepest valleys. But we have hope. I guess it's true... It's darkest before the dawn.

Inspiration.

The precursor to BUTT/FANTASTIC MAN was Re-Magazine. The magazine existed from '97 - '04 and featured one person per issue... A person with an extreme personality. And so, it was revolutionary when they featured Marcel and his confessions as a recovering dieter and foodie. He's beautiful and encouraging. If anyone knows him or has a copy of this issue, let me know... Everyone else can see what I'm talking about here.
